Tornado 18U Roll to Inaugural Victory in DetroitRolling to Victory in Detroit, Michigan - Texas Tornado 18U (1-0-0) After weeks of preparation on and off the ice, the Texas Tornado 18U Tier I team traveled north to Detroit, Michigan to compete in the Motor City Cup. Last year the Motor City Cup, a tournament devised for the elite Midget Major- Tier I- AAA teams across North America, hosted over 80 scouts which raised the energy level and competitive play for all the players. With forty-four teams on paper, the showdown in Detroit has been on the mind of the Tornado players and coaches for weeks. The Tornado, led by Head Coach Tom Yockey, opened their inaugural season this morning to a hard fought 4-3 victory over West Michigan. "The game was full of penalties as both teams were definitely shaking off the rust," Coach Yockey explained after the game. "This game was a great start to the year and we now know what aspects to focus on for the future." The game started just before 10am on Friday, September 11, 2009 and the Tornado players arrived early and eager to play. Shane Piggott, number 17, from Southlake, TX scored the first goal for the Texas Tornado 18U, which will forever be know as "The Inceptive Goal," as Ryan Holloway, number 18, notched the first assist. The Tornado players and coaches plan to continue the inaugural weekend with success and determination as they take on the Michigan Jaguars 18U at 4:45 pm, Friday, September 11, 2009. (Game Note: Michigan Jaguars 18U were defeated 4-1 by the Michigan Northstars 18U in the first round.) Tony Curtale, returning behind the bench for his ninth season as coach of the three-time National Champion Tornado, works closely with the Tornado Midget Program which will includes practices with the Tornado Junior A team, utilization of the Tornado Off Ice Program and access to Tornado games. "The Tornado look at this as a great opportunity to continue the tradition of developing players and promoting the Tornado brand, not only locally but across the country," said Curtale. Curtale has more than proven his talent and ability to take teams to the top and is recognized as one of the premier developers of young talent in North America. The Tornado 18U team will be coached by Tom Yockey. Tom spent fourteen years as Coach Curtale's Head Scout and Recruiter, including the last nine with the Tornado, in the Detroit region and has coached Bantam and Midget AAA teams for the Little Ceasars and Michigan Ice Dogs (now Victory Honda) organizations. He currently serves as the Director of the Southlake Carroll Hockey Program who's Varsity Gold team finished last season as the State runner-up. |
